Opportunities and Risk Management
Gold mining in Africa is a critical economic driver, with the continent contributing about a quarter of the world's gold output. The sector includes large-scale industrial mines (LSGM) and artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM), each presenting distinct opportunities and risks. IAMU leverages technology and its network of co-operation agreements to advance trade opportunities, particularly for ASGM enterprises. Upstream Risks: These include corruption, human rights abuses, and environmental concerns. Non-state armed groups often control gold mine sites and smuggling routes, posing significant challenges. In some LSGM countries, infrastructure issues, high labor costs, and community activism hinder the mining industry’s efficiency. Downstream Risks: These involve misuse of "recycled" gold labeling, money laundering, and terrorist financing due to gold’s lack of traceability. Child labor and mercury pollution further complicate the sector. Despite these challenges, the African gold mining landscape offers substantial growth opportunities.
